between the mind, body and spirit. Jade stone is said to promote resourcefulness, courage, compassion, wealth and longevity which are all qualities that I admire. It is also the color of the heart chakra and used for healing matters of the heart, building trust & fidelity.
We had a chance to catch up with Shewhospeaks_ ! She is always traveling and on the go so we had to send a Q&A to get a little more info on what drives her yoga practice! Hopefully you will see a short interview soon when she returns to Atlanta! Until then check out what she had to say below!
What does your name Shewhospeaks symbolize?
Nommo – The power of the spoken word. I have always been drawn to words, not only in literary tradition, more specifically in oral tradition. As a poet myself, I quickly fell in love with the discovery of my own voice and encouraging others to do the same. Shewhospeaks symbolizes the essence of every young girl in me, that has grown into every woman & the power of finding, acknowledging and not being ashamed to assert my “voice”.
When did you discover yoga and did you stick with it initially?
I discovered my passion for yoga practice when I was pregnant with my daughter. I wanted to do the best thing for my mind and body on a holistic level, to prepare for the growing life inside me. Yoga was something that we would both benefit from during gestation and I needed that. Movement and meditation had already been a part of how I understood the world but not necessarily in the terms of yoga. I realized after my first class that I had a love for the application and practice and that this would be the start of a lifelong study & partnership.
Did you have a different perception of yoga before you began practicing?
My perception of yoga, as we know it in the west, before developing my own practice was that it had become a fad. There seemed to be this culture of yoga that was very specific, and had appropriated the spiritual practices for the same of a good work out class. Which may or may not have turned me off, but I decided to give it a shot and discovered that a balance could exist.
How does incorporating meditation in your yoga practice help ?
Meditation is the ability to find peace of mind in the midst of the chaos around you. Meditation is certainly in my daily practice whether I move or not. Some days my entire practice is meditation. I enjoy moving meditations a lot such as walking, running, dancing. My meditations help me re-center. Silent or stoic meditations allow for clarity and setting intention for the day. The time I take with myself each day helps to conceptualize the lessons that I am learning and re-learning each time I get on my mat.
I know it must be great to practice with your daughter!… How has yoga help you bond more with your younger half?
Yoga is our love language! You will hear me say that a lot. Not only has our practice grown together since the first time I felt her move inside me, but we also have learned a great deal about each other as we grow as individuals. Yoga has become play time, story time, adventure, non verbal communication, and I use philosophy and the 8 limbs of yoga as a constant reference in my parenting. It’s without conscious effort, but with a great deal of intention to parent on purpose. Yoga has become a way of growing, building & processing, in our household.
“Yoga is not about touching your toes” What does this saying represent internally for you?
Yoga is so much more about the process & discovery than nailing the pose. Asanas are only one part of all that is yoga, and even in practicing the postures you learn so much more in the journey to get there and being present, than focusing on some destination of points meeting. If you can touch your toes that’s dope too! It is then that yoga, for me, becomes about the breathing & bending & folding; awareness, strength, resourcefulness, and patience with the self. And even then there is no destination, I would ask myself, now how do your toes feel?
How important is it to embrace who you are as a person inside and out?
Embracing thyself requires knowing thyself. This is essential to being self aware and yoga helps to develop awareness of our bodies as well as our movements within our bodies. What’s beautiful about developing a practice is that you can start from where you are, where ever that is! In my own practice, flexibility and body moment came naturally but I really had to work at having patience with myself and my own mind. It was in that process that I learned myself e be more and developed an appreciation for things I had once been self conscious about.
I see that you are familiar with Rose quartz ….What is your favorite crystal? and do you include crystals in your meditation or yoga practice?
I do use stones in meditation and for setting intention in my life. My favorite crystal is Jade. It is the stone of peace and harmony
Have you experienced any hard to explain sensations or moments during meditation? If so feel free to share what you may have learned
Absolutely! When I have been able to really let go of everything during meditation I have experienced an almost euphoric out of body perspective. It is definitely hard to explain but in those moments, I have discovered just how much I may have been holding on to something that I had convinced myself I’d let go. The awareness of the present moment often caused me to feel memory in my physical body. Our mind can be so focused on analyzing every aspect of things that we skip the “now” and go straight to “why” or “what does this mean” or “what next,” that we forget what it feels like to be present.
What is the most important lessons you have learned from a dream?
I have really vivid dreams. Typically my dreams often has a similar theme or common thread and I always write about them. When I was a kid, in all of my dreams no matter the setting, I always had the ability to fly. I remember around 12 or so I started summarizing that as a subliminal message that no matter what situation life brings my way, I always would have the ability to lift myself out of it and fly above and beyond any hardship if only I could remember that I already had inside of me, the tools I needs to survive. That lesson has stayed with me…. and I’m still flying in my dreams too!
If there was one reason to encourage someone to do yoga that is not practicing already … what reason would you give them?
The benefits of yoga are endless but I would say this; Yoga is a great way to connect with yourself, find the rhythm of your breath, and improve your overall functionality & focus. The most real reason why I practice yoga and meditation is that I felt I existed so far from from the qualities that I aspired to have as a foundation for my life and for raising my young queen and I was in search of stable ground from which to build and grow.
Which beach do you see yourself traveling to in 5 years ?
That’s a tough question! Now that I’ve had the chance to see international beaches im in love! And I love the water so I’ll say that I see myself traveling to every beach I can between now and the next 5 years lol. But seriously, I would love to experience the beaches of the Ivory Coast, or even Greece.
