Dirty Gold War – The Human Cost of Luxury

What are the human and environmental costs of the gold industry in Brazil and Peru? Could “green” gold be the future? Find out in ‘Dirty Gold War’. Gold has always been one of the most desirable precious metals. There has been plenty of coverage of water shortages and dwindling diamond reserves but the scarcity of gold, the gold rush of recent years and its devastating effects on people and the environment have received much less attention. Our documentary demonstrates the uncomfortable truth about the gold industry and explores how gold could “go green.” Our investigative research leads us into the heart of a secretive business; to the leading mining companies and the victims of the industry. On a journey from the Amazon Basin in Brazil to the Andes in Peru, “Dirty Gold War” documents the environmentally destructive effects of gold mining, which is often done with the aid of highly toxic mercury and cyanide. It also addresses the discrepancy between the miserable conditions faced by miners and the massive health risks posed to local residents and the luxury of London or Geneva, where the gold is ultimately sold. It points to the long-standing conflict of interest between an industry that does its best to avoid environmental regulation and activists campaigning for “green” gold. Yet it also raises hope, for major mining companies are slowly rethinking their approach. Some jewelers are demanding ethically sourced gold and new legislation. Nevertheless, ecologically sustainable forms of mining are still a rarity and universally ethical gold remains a pipe dream for now. This documentary shows how we could be more environmentally conscious in our use of global gold resources and demonstrates the need for industry, policy-makers and consumers to change their ways. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events.
