The Dark Side of the Moon

A number of people who’ve seen the annual lunar phase and libration videos have asked what theother side of the Moon looks like, the side that can’t be seen from the Earth. This video answers that question.

Just like the near side, the far side goes through a complete cycle of phases. But the terrain of the far side is quite different. It lacks the large dark spots, called maria, that make up the familiar Man in the Moon on the near side. Instead, craters of all sizes crowd together over the entire far side. The far side is also home to one of the largest and oldest impact features in the solar system, the South Pole-Aitken basin, visible here as a slightly darker bruise covering the bottom third of the disk.

The far side was first seen in a handful of grainy images returned by the Soviet Luna 3 probe, which swung around the Moon in October, 1959. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter was launched fifty years later, and since then it has returned hundreds of terabytes of data, allowing LRO scientists to create extremely detailed and accurate maps of the far side. Those maps were used to create the imagery seen here.

Full Moon in Leo

Feb 3rd – Full Moon at 14’ Leo 47
11:08pm UT

Awareness is like the sun. When it shines on things, they are transformed.

The Core Theme for this Full Moon = Transformation, Heart Expansion and Consciousness

Similarly to last month’s Full Moon, the Full Moon on February 3rd is also very powerful as it too activates this final phase of the ongoing Uranus/Pluto square. Although we have lived with this enlightening energy since the first square in Dec 2012, its transformational effect has felt particularly intense since the second to last exact square on Dec 15 2014. This is due to these two major planetary deities remaining closely connected until after the final exact square on March 17th 2015.

The dynamic energy of this Full Moon in fiery Leo is also enhanced by the conjunction to Jupiter. Leo is ruled by the Sun, which in turn is the ruler of our heart, as well as our general vitality. Hence our main invitation at this time is to expand our heart energy, as well as our individual and collective consciousness. This theme is reinforced by the Yod(an aspect pattern consisting of 2 x 150° aspects and one sextile 60° )to the Full Moon which includes an aspect to the Mars/Chiron conjunction in Pisces as well as one to Pluto in Capricorn. With the Sun in Aquarius as the release point for the Yod, this is a particularly good time to heal our illusory sense of collective and individual isolation and aloneness, as well as inauthentic inner and outer structures through contributing to humanity from a place of inner joy and self-awareness.

Fueled by the conjunction with Jupiter, the Leo Full Moon energy is particularly dynamic and happily resonates with the ongoing request by Uranus in Aries for innovative, idealistic, groundbreaking action. However, with the North Node still in Libra opposite Uranus, the call for action requires balance, fairness and compromise at all times.

This Full Moon also brings with it a powerful stellium(a combination of more than 3 planets in one sign) within a few degrees of the ongoing Neptune in Pisces. With Mars, Venus and Chiron all gathered in this watery sign, we may feel more tuned into the energies of those around us and beyond. The veil is truly thinning and with Pluto continuing to be the only planet in Earth, it is particularly important to find ongoing ways to anchor and ground ourselves within our body, on this beautiful planet. Without grounding it can be somewhat challenging to maintain a sense of inner balance and centeredness and we can more easily get pulled into and/or create energy draining drama and trauma.

This is an excellent time to express our creativity, particularly through dance, music and acting. The arts can offer us a very helpful ‘container’ for these powerful emotional currents which when left unconscious, can act like the melusine and potentially draw some individuals into the realm of addictions. Consciousness is particularly important right now to support us in navigating these powerful evolutionary energies which are helping us remember who we truly are as infinite spirit beings in a human body.

Some questions we might consider at this time:

  1. What would my life look like if my heart were fully open?
  2. Where am I choosing to remain unconscious in my life?
  3. Where and how do I ‘play’ in my life?
  4. Which intuitive skills do I connect with most strongly?
  5. How am I creatively expressing myself in life?
  6. What tools support me in anchoring myself on this planet at this time?
  7. How am I living out my ideals?

Some Tools to work with during this Full Moon time:

  1. Dancing, laughing, painting, singing, playing…
  2. Spending time by the ocean or other bodies of water.
  3. Meditating and chanting. Working with Crystal bowls may be particularly helpful at this time.
  4. Healthy eating and detoxing from sugar, alcohol and other mood altering substances, as our body is likely to be more sensitive with the Pisces stellium.
  5. Connecting with the invisible realms, whilst remaining conscious and grounded.

Universal Selfie

Have you seen the largest picture ever taken? For the record, it’s a mammoth 1.5 billion pixel image (69,536 x 22,230) and requires about 4.3 GB disk space. Oh, and it’ll take your breath away.

On January 5, NASA released an image of the Andromeda galaxy, our closest galactic neighbour, captured by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The full image is made up of 411 Hubble images, takes you through a 100 million stars and travels over more than 40,000 light years. Well, a section of it anyway.

Prepare to feel extremely tiny and insignificant as you marvel at this fly-through video created by YouTuber daveachuk and make sure you stick around till the end. Seriously.

Super Saturn

In 1610, after he built his telescope, Galileo Galilei first spotted enormous Saturn’s gigantic rings. More than 400 years later, astronomers have in a sense dwarfed that discovery with a similar first.

Using powerful optics, they have found a much larger planet-like body, J1407b, with rings 200 times the size of Saturn’s, U.S. and Dutch astronomers said.

It lies some 400 light-years away from Earth.

For decades, scientists have believed that many moons around large planets formed out of such ring systems. But this is the first one astronomers have observed outside of our solar system, they said.

It was discovered in 2012, but a detailed analysis of its data was recently completed and published.

Dominating the sky

If J1407b were in our solar system, it would dominate Earth’s nightly sky.

“If we could replace Saturn’s rings with the rings around J1407b, they would be easily visible at night and be many times larger than the full moon,” said Matthew Kenworthy from the Netherlands’ Leiden Observatory.

56-day eclipse

With the enormous size of the rings, the eclipse the astronomers observed lasted 56 days.

But the star did not go completely dark for nearly two months. Some of J1407b’s 30 rings are denser, blocking more light, and some of them are less dense, letting more light through.

And there are gaps between the rings, leading the scientists to theorize that “exomoons” have formed and cut clean orbits through the debris, like the moons around Saturn.

Our own solar system’s ringed giant has at least 60 moons, according to NASA.

Bigger than a planet

Like its system of rings, planet J1407b is also much larger than Saturn, said astrophysicist Eric Mamajek, whose team at the University of Rochester discovered the object. “You could think of it as kind of a super Saturn.”

It is called a brown dwarf, a size classification somewhere between a planet and a star, according to the California Institute of Technology.

Brown dwarfs are hot but don’t burst into nuclear fusion the way stars do, so they don’t give off light.

The scientists are calling on amateur astronomers to keep an eye on star J1407 in hopes they may observe the rings eclipsing it again and report the results to the American Association of Variable Star Observers, which collects astronomical data on “stars that change in brightness.”

And astronomers will also search for more such ringed systems.

The oldest star encircled by earth like planets

International astronomers said Tuesday they have discovered the oldest known star encircled by five Earth-sized planets, signaling that planets formed throughout the history of the universe.

The system is 11.2 billion years old and was born near the dawn of the galaxy, said the report in the Astrophysical Journal.

The star has been named Kepler-444, since it was found with the help of NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft which launched in 2009.

Its five planets are a bit smaller than the Earth, ranging in size from Venus to Mercury.

They circle their Sun-like star in less than 10 days, at a distance smaller than one-tenth the distance between the Earth and Sun — making them too hot to be habitable.

But the sheer age of the star has stunned astronomers.

At a distance of 117 light-years from Earth, Kepler-444 is two and a half times older than our solar system, which is 4.5 billion years old.

“We’ve never seen anything like this — it is such an old star and the large number of small planets make it very special,” said co-author Daniel Huber from the University of Sydney’s School of Physics.

“It is extraordinary that such an ancient system of terrestrial-sized planets formed when the universe was just starting out, at a fifth its current age,” he added.

Astronomers can measure a distant planet’s age using a technique called asteroseismology, which measures the oscillations of the host star caused by sound waves trapped within it.

These waves lead to small pulses in the star’s brightness, which can be analyzed to measure its diameter, mass and age.

Ankh on Mars?

On todays search for Martian anomalies, Mars Moon Space PZC member Raw Spirt brought up a very good image.

There is so much evidence out there that life exist on other planets that it is becoming more and more accepted in the public eyes. Furthermore there is evidence of our connection to the life beyond earth.   Did the Egyptians leave earth or come here from there?
