The $1 Oragami Microscope

Despite the simple construction, Foldscope is a capable tool of real science. Users can adjust the focus using paper tabs, and the engineering team, led by bioengineer Manu Prakash and funded in part by the Gates Foundation, explained in a paper [PDF] that Foldscope “can provide over 2,000X magnification with submicron resolution.” They hope eventually to manufacture 1 billion of the inexpensive microscopes each year, and to use them to get more kids interested in science, and to provide out-of-the-way places with better diagnostic capabilities for diseases like E. Coli and malaria.Screen shot 2014-03-25 at 2.06.18 AM

A Video demonstration of assemble can be found below

After watching ….. It seems a bit complex  especially if I have to cut out the pieces to assemble it myself. I think i may download the pdf and give it a try though. I think I can afford a few hours and a dollar to testing my engineering abilities.

Is it important ?

The master was strolling through a field of wheat when a disciple came up to him: “I can’t tell which is the true path. What’s the secret? What does that ring on your right hand mean?” asked the master.

“My father gave it to me before dying.”

“Well, give it to me.”

The disciple obeyed, and the master tossed the ring into the middle of the field of wheat.

“Now what?” shouted the disciple.

“Now I have to stop doing everything I was doing to look for the ring! It’s important to me!”

“When you find it, remember this: you yourself answered the question you asked me. That is how you tell the true path: it is more important than all the rest.”
